The Proper Usage of the ; Punctuation Mark

The kennel is the dog's house and it sleeps there every day.
The kennel is the dog's house; it sleeps there every day.

I like horses, however, I don't know how to care for them.
I like horses; however, I don't know how to care for them.

The ; punctuation mark allows you to continue the sentence without putting a full stop. The first word after the ; punctuation mark should be a lowercase letter.

The comma is similar to the semicolon in that they both initiate a pause rather than ending the sentence.
